MONROE, La. – Eli Hynes was 4-for-5 with four RBI, but four Memphis errors proved costly as the University of Memphis baseball team fell 11-7 at UL-Monroe on Wednesday at Warhawk field. The loss drops Memphis to 5-8 on the season while UL-Monroe improves to 9-5.
Memphis wasted no time opening a two-run lead in the first as Carter White and Hynes recorded RBI for the Tigers. Adam McClain led the game off with a walk and White followed with a RBI double to the left field corner. Hynes extended his hit streak to 12 games with a RBI single up the middle that gave the U of M the 2-0 advantage.
Tiger starter Erik Schoenrock pitched the first two innings and struck out four, but five hits and a walk allowed five runs to score in the third for ULM. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, but Schoenrock recorded the first out on a strikeout. Caleb Clowers and Jeremy Rapp hit RBI singles to plate three runs and Corben Green added a sacrifice fly for a fourth run. With reliever J.D. Wallace making his pitching debut, Judd Edwards singled to right to score the fifth run of the stanza.
Colton Simbeck scored the Tigers third run of the evening on a passed ball in the fourth, but a three-run fifth inning stretched the Warhawks lead to 8-3. Memphis committed an error and allowed two RBI singles as ULM plated three runs in the inning.
Hynes collected his third hit of the night with a RBI double in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-4, but the Warhawks answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh to regain the five-run advantage at 9-4. The Tigers had a chance to trim the lead in the eighth, but two strikeouts with the bases loaded kept the Warhawks in control.
UL-Monroe added two runs in the ninth to gain an 11-4 advantage as a sacrifice fly and infield single plated two runs. The Tigers attempted a rally in the ninth as Hynes belted a two-run home run to cut the lead to 11-6. T.J. Rich hit a one-out solo home run, but that proved to be the final tally as the Tigers fell 11-7.
Hynes led the Tigers with a 4-for-5 day and he drove in four runs for his fifth multi-hit game and fourth multi-RBI performance. White was the only other Tiger with multiple hits as he had two. ULM and Memphis both finished with two hits.
