Memphis Falls to Indiana in Final Game of Desert Classic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Memphis softball team fell 8-5 to Indiana in the final game of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic on Sunday morning.
The Tigers (2-8) led by as much as two runs, 4-2, until the Hoosiers (3-6) scored a pair of runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take the three-run win.
Memphis outhit Indiana 10-9 in the game with all but two starters recording hits in the game. Sophomore Amber Lindahl, junior Morgan Mosby and freshman Kassy Dunn all led the team with two hits in the game. Lindahl had two runs scored and senior Jessica Phillips had two RBI.
Sophomore Ellen Roberts (1-3) suffered the loss in relief. Roberts allowed four runs on four hits in an inning and two-third. Freshman Sara Pearson started the game for Memphis and allowed four runs on four hits in three and a third innings.
Lora Olson earned the victory for Indiana in relief. Olson allowed one run on three hits in four innings of work with four strikeouts. She also hit a two-run homer in her first at bat.
Memphis jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Lindahl led off the game with the first of her two singles and scored from third on a two-out single by Phillips.
Indiana answered with a run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Jenna Abraham hit a two-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She then scored on a RBI single from Amanda Wagner.
The Hoosiers then went up 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the second. A fielder's choice on a ball hit to short with the bases loaded by Breanass Saucedo gave Indiana the go-ahead run.
Memphis answered in the top of the third with three runs to take a 4-2 lead. The Tigers scored on three hits, including an RBI double Roberts and a sac fly from Phillips for her second RBI in the game.
Indiana tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer from Olson to left field. The Hoosiers then went up 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles from Shannon Cawley and Jena Malmen.
Dunn hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning for Memphis to cut the Indiana lead to 6-5. But, the Hoosiers scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball and a double by Cassie Gogreve.
Memphis will next host its season opener with a game against Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Tigers then host the Blues City Classic from Friday-Sunday that includes Northern Iowa, Miami-Ohio, Missouri State, Southeast Missouri State and Western Illinois.
