Neither team led by more than four points in the first set, and Memphis (6-13, 1-4 C-USA) never trailed by more than one point in the first set. Lauren Hawkins gave the Tigers a 6-3 lead with one of her six kills in the match, early in the first set. Memphis and UAB traded points until the Tigers took control of the set with the score tied at 19. The Tigers scored consecutive points before UAB (8-11, 2-3 C-USA) called for a timeout. Marija Jovanovic hammered home a kill out of the break, giving Memphis a 22-19 lead, and Maja Kostic made it 23-20 Memphis with another kill. Jovanovic recorded another kill and Viktorija Teivane ended the 25-21 set win with an ace.
With the score tied at 12 in the second set, the Blazers began to take control, going on a quick 3-0 spurt. They extended the lead to 20-15 before the Tigers called for timeout. UAB scored back-to-back points on kills from Kate Morrell and Kirsten Gallagher to push their lead to 22-15. The Blazers went on to take the set 25-17.
The Blazers quickly jumped out a 5-1 lead in the third set, and extended the lead to 7-2. Memphis came back and got within 9-6, but it wasn’t enough as UAB answered with an 8-3 run to take a commanding 17-9 lead. The Tigers got as close as six points before the Blazers took the set 25-15, gaining a 2-1 lead in the match.
Memphis didn’t go away easily, however, scoring the first two points of the fourth set. UAB grabbed an 8-7 lead before a Katie Meyer and Jovanovic block sparked the offense. Jovanovic followed with a kill and Altrese Hawkins ended the 4-0 run with another kill. Following an Aleksandra Petronijevic service ace, Kostic recorded one of her 13 kills in the match to put the Tigers ahead 16-10. The lead grew to 20-11 following Kostic and Altrese Hawkins kills as the Tigers evened the match at 2-2 with the 25-16 set win.
UAB quickly jumped out a 3-0 lead in the fifth set, only to see the Tigers come back. Teivane evened the set a 5-5 with her only kill of the set before Jaden Louie and Meyer teamed up for a block to put Memphis ahead. The Tigers then led 7-6 before the Blazers went on a run. UAB scored the next four points and six of the next seven to take a 12-8 lead, and force Memphis to take their second timeout. Kostic recorded a kill out of the break and the Tigers pulled within 12-10. However, UAB went on to take the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
Three Tigers recorded at least 10 kills in the match, led by Jovanovic’s 17. Altrese Hawkins followed with 16 and Kostic rounded out the group with 13 kills. Kostic set a career-high with 20 digs for the double-double while Hawkins also posted a double-double with 14 digs. Petronijevic registered a match and career-high 36 digs while Teivane chipped in with 14 digs. Louie led the team with 41 assists to go along with eight digs.
Hawkins moved into second place on Memphis’ all-time kills list, passing Nancy Nellans who had 1,623 kills. Hawkins currently has 1,633 career kills.
Memphis will travel to take on UAB on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
