MEMPHIS, Tenn.-
Memphis (7-6-3, 3-2-2 C-USA) defeated UAB (7-6-3, 4-4-0 C-USA) 3-1, on Wednesday at Mike Rose Stadium. Benjamin Ciosanski netted the game-winning goal for the second match in a row. With the win the Tigers collected three key points in the Conference USA standings, with a berth in the league tournament still up for grabs.
In the 38th minute, Chandler Gagnon got the Tigers on the board with a laser from 35 yards out. He took a pass from Quincy Thomas and ripped the shot into the upper left 90 to put Memphis a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Gagnon's fourth of the 2012 campaign.
UAB almost tallied the equalizer in the 44th minute as Mladen Lemez laced a free kick from just outside the box. His blast stayed low with Tigers-goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui smothering the shot to keep the Tigers in the lead.
In the second half, UAB evened the score 1-1 in the 76th-minute on Kofi Gyawu's sixth goal of the season. Alex Clay played the ball to the top of the box; Gyawu spun and fired the shot beating the goalkeeper to the left.
Six-minutes later, Ciosanski netted what proved to be the game-winner for Memphis. A loose ball was deflected by a UAB player, Ciosanski fired the deflection from 10-yards-out, finishing to the back right. This was the second game-winning goal in a row for the Bemen, Germany native.
Mark Sherrod added some insurance to the Memphis lead with five-minutes left to play in the match. Jordan Johnson served the ball into the box as Sherrod finished with a header from center goal giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead. The goal was Sherrod's 10th-of the season, with the assist Johnson's third.
Memphis now faces No. 14 SMU to close out the regular season on Friday, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. (CT). The match will be televised live on FOX Soccer Channel as the NSCAA Game of the week.
