Memphis (6-6-3, 2-2-2 C-USA) defeated FIU (7-7-2, 0-6-1 C-USA) 2-1 in double-overtime, on Saturday. Benjamin Ciosanski nabbed the Golden Goal, helping the Tigers pick up key points in the Conference USA standings.
After a scoreless first half, FIU broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 54th-minute. Colby Burdette collected his fifth goal of the season to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage. Lyle Lidnquist and Daniel Gonzalez were each credited with assists on the play.
Ciosanski netted the equalizer in the 64th-minute with help from freshman Austin Stone. Stone served the ball from 35-yards-out, Ciosanski then connected with the ball in flight for the score. The goal was Ciosanski's second of the season, with the assist being Stone's first wearing the Blue and Gray.
With the game moving to double-overtime, Tigers-goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui was tested in his first-ever start for Memphis. Uzcategui notched two saves in the 101st and 105th-minutes to keep the Tigers in business, bringing his total to three on the day.
In the 109th-minute, Ciosanski got his second score of match and the game-winner. Sophomore Chandler Gagnon passed to Ciosanski who nailed a shot from just inside the top-right-corner of the box beating the keeper to the back-left-corner.
Memphis now returns home for its final two regular-season games of 2012 taking on conference foes UAB on Wednesday and No. 19 SMU on Friday; both kickoffs are set for 7 p.m. (CT) at Mike Rose Stadium. The Tigers season finale against No. 19 SMU will be televised live on FOX Soccer Channel as the NSCAA Game of the Week.
