Memphis (5-6-3, 1-2-2 C-USA) fell to UCF (6-5-3, 3-2-0 C-USA) in double-overtime 4-3, on Wednesday. The Knights' Omar Vallejo netted the Golden Goal for his first goal of the season.
Vallejo found the back of the net only 15-seconds into the double-overtime period. Deshorn Brown took a shot that was deflected in the box, Vallejo finished off of the deflection to give the Knights their sixth win overall and third Conference USA win of 2012.
Entering the second half, the Tigers and Knights were scoreless until Brown broke the deadlock in the 56th-minute. Brown received a pass from midfield by Matthew Gaskins and made a nice move to finish just below the crossbar, giving the Knight a 1-0 advantage. It was the first of three goals on the night for Brown.
12-seconds later, Memphis' Jordan Johnson knotted the game at one-all. The Tigers-senior notched the unassisted goal from 10-yards-out beating UCF-goalkeeper Sebastian Evers to the right. Johnsons' 57th-minute goal was his first of the 2012 campaign.
Memphis then took the lead 2-1 on Liam Collins ' second goal of the season in the 67th-minute. Mark Sherrod played the ball to Collins who finished with an arching shot to the top left corner for the go-ahead-goal.
Collins returned the favor to Sherrod in the 79th-minute, setting up Sherrod's ninth goal of the season. Patrick Tho, Jr. passed to Collins from the lower-lower right to the top-right corner of the box. Collins played the ball into the box as Sherrod finished with a header to increase the Memphis lead 3-1. The play marked the second-straight game that Collins had recorded both a goal and an assist in the same game.
With six-minutes left to play in regulation, Brown pulled the Knights within one of the Memphis lead on his second goal of the night. Vallejo played a free kick into the box, Brown then finished with a header to draw the Knights closer.
Three-minutes later, Brown finished the hat-trick and netted the game equalizer. Vallejo played another free-kick into the box, A. J. Nelson took a shot that was initially stopped by Memphis-goalkeeper Conor Hurley; Brown collected the loose ball to record his 11th-goal of the season, sending the game to overtime.
In the first overtime Memphis controlled the ball taking two shots and forcing a corner. Memphis took one shot on goal on a breakaway by Sherrod in the 94th-minute. Sherrod's shot was punched up and over the crossbar by the UCF goalkeeper to end the threat.
Memphis returns to C-USA league play on Saturday at FIU with kickoff slated for 12 p.m. (CT). For more information on the University of Memphis men's soccer program and all Tigers-athletics please visit GoTigersGo.com.
