Women's Tennis Pulls Out 5-2 Win Over USM

MEMPHIS, Tenn.-The Lady Tigers rallied in singles play to overcome a 2-0 deficit to Southern Miss, taking down the Golden Eagles in a 5-2 decision on Sunday at The Racquet Club of Memphis, wraping up the 2011 home dual slate blemish free at 10-0.
With the win, the U of M improves to 15-8 overall, one win shy of the program record of 16 team wins, which occured in the 2003 spring season. Furthermore, Memmphis advances to 3-1 in Conference USA play while USM falls to 8-12 overall and 2-4 in conference.
USM jumped out front with the doubles point after winning at the No. 2 and 3 flights. Then Asa Bengtson would get the win at No. 4 singles as Kelly Gray retired up in her first set 4-3, giving the Golden Eaglers the 2-0 advantage.
The rest of singles action would belong to the Lady Tigers. 107th-ranked Courtney Collins took care of business first at the No. 2 slot, with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Stephanie Dellocono. Next, Stefanie Mikesz powered past Elja van Berlo at No. 3 singles to tie the dual at two all.
Mariya Slupska came back from a first-set loss to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 against Vroni van Berlo at the top seed and Kathleen Hawkins pulled out the clutch 6-3, 7-5 win at the No. 5 position to clinch the match for the U of M.
For the fifth point in the match, Andrea Arques-Garcia would force a third set at the No. 6 slot where she downed Moorea Williams 10-6 in the supertiebreaker to win by a final score of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6).
The Blue and Gray will be back in action Friday, April 15 when the netters head to Tulsa for the final conference match of the regular season in a match scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
