Memphis Comes Back to Clip CofC, 4-3

CHARLESTON, S.C.--After falling behind 2-0 to the Cougars, the Lady Tigers bounced back in singles play to edge the College of Charleston (1-4) in a tight 4-3 decision at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles, an 8-6 win from junior Mariya Slupska and freshman Kathleen Hawkins over Kinsey Casey and Kelly Kambourelis at No. 2 doubles came too late, as the CofC had already won at the first and third flights. Emma Hayman and Irene Viana took down Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray 8-1 at the top flight, and Andrea Arques-Garcia and Stefanie Mikesz fell at No. 3 to Caroline and Christin Newman, 8-4.
A 6-2, 6-2 loss at No. 6 position by Arques-Garcia to Viana dug an even deeper hole, but the Lady Tigers (5-6) would be able to climb out.
The first point for the Blue and Gray came from freshman freshman Stefanie Mikesz at the No. 3 slot in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Caroline Newman. Top-seeded Courtney Collins, ranked 114th in the nation, tied up the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-0 trumping of Christin Newman.
Slupska rebounded from a first-set loss to pick up the third point for Memphis with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 upending of Hayman at No. 2 and sophomore Kelly Gray produced the key victory at No. 4 singles, where her 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Casey clinched the dual match for the Lady Tigers, which improve to 5-5.
Memphis will remain in Charleston to play its first conference match of the 2011 season against East Carolina on Tuesday, March 8th at 9:30 a.m. ET before a 2:30 p.m. contest with Wofford.
