Memphis' Defense Harasses UAPB in 89-60 Victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Constant pressure from the U of M and Brittany Carter's 23 points helped the Tigers rout the University of Arkansas - Pine Bluff, 89-60, on Saturday afternoon at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Memphis (3-1) forced UAPB (0-3) into 31 turnovers on the afternoon, leading to 33 points for the Tigers, while only yielding 13 points off of 13 miscues.
Carter (Covington, Ga./Newton County High School) scored 19 points on 9-for-16 (56.3 percent) shooting from the field, including 5-for-6 from beyond the arc (83.3 percent). The five three-point shots made was a career-high for the senior guard and were her first five on the season.
Forward Nicole Dickson (Greeneville, Tenn./Greeneville) chimed in with 19 points and 10 rebounds, her third straight double-double of the season, while forward Jasmine Lee (Bessemer, Ala./Jess Lanier HS) added 14 points, 10 from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir (Springfield, Mass./New Leadership Charter) posted a sensational line of six points, six rebounds, seven assists and a career-high six steals.
Memphis led at the half, 43-31. The Tigers opened the game pressuring the Lady Lions en route a seven point lead by the 15:48 mark of the first half, a margin they maintained for most of the opening stanza.
Carter led all scorers in the half with 17 points, nearly putting down a dunk in the process. She lost control of the ball as she went to throw it down, but was able to secure the lay-up as she touched the rim. The 5-9 guard shot 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc in the first half, snapping an 0-for-10 start to the season from three-point territory.
Dickson chipped in nine points and Lee added seven in the frame. The Tigers' suffocating defense forced 15 Lady Lions' turnovers in the half, while Memphis coughed the ball up just eight times.
The Lady Lions were paced by White Station product Chigozianyi Okwumabua with 14 points. Carlisha Walker added 13 points and seven boards and Jenise Gentry just missed the double-double, with nine points and 10 boards.
With the win, Memphis improves to 3-1 on the year, while UAPB falls to 0-3.
Memphis will play host to Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. CT at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Despite dropping their last contest to Southeastern Louisiana, 75-72, in 2008, the Tigers hold a 5-3 series advantage. Southeastern Louisiana lost by just eight at Texas last week. The Tuesday night game will be University of Memphis Faculty & Staff Night, where all faculty and staff will receive free admission with a University of Memphis ID.
