MEMPHIS, Tenn.--TCU (4-3-1) scored three second-half goals en route to handing #17/18 Memphis (6-2-0) its second loss of the season 3-0 Friday night, at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
The Horned Frogs struck first in the 55th minute on a 25-yard howler from freshman forward Kelly Johnson. Johnson took a pass from the sideline and lined up the long strike that sailed just over Lady Tiger keeper Elise Kuhar-Pitter's reach to put TCU up 1-0.
It was the first second-half goal allowed by Memphis since the Lady Tigers' 2-1 loss to Oklahoma State on Sept. 3 in Stillwater, Okla.
The Lady Tigers appeared poised to tie things up in the 70th minute when Ashley Berra received the ball in space, streaking down the right side of the field. Kelsey Walters, however, made a point-blank stop in goal for the Horned Frogs and preserved the 1-0 margin.
TCU then struck again in the 70th minute when senior Kristen Barg received a cross from junior Kristen Halverson at the opposite post before kicking it through to push the Horned Frogs' lead to 2-0.
The Horned Frogs extended their lead to 3-0 in the 84th minute when a cross deflected off a Memphis player and trickled into the back of the net, resulting in an own goal against Memphis.
Despite managing 16 shots and seven corners, the Lady Tigers struggled with ball possession and control throughout the game, allowing the Horned Frogs to dictate the pace and keep pressure on the Memphis' defense.
Kuhar-Pitters finished with a season-high tying six saves on 14 Horned Frog shots. TCU attempted five corner kicks, and Walters recorded five saves in goal for TCU.
Emmaleigh Davis, Vendula Strnadova, Alena Strnadova, and Berra all recorded three shots for the Lady Tigers. Rasheeda Ansari was the only other Memphis player with multiple shot attempts (2).
The opening half saw both teams try to establish pace and ball control, but neither was able to sway the momentum in its favor.
TCU had numerous chances to score in the opening half as the Horned Frogs got off nine shots, including three corners. The Horned Frogs kept consistent pressure on the Memphis defense, forcing Kuhar-Pitters to make a season-high four first half saves.
Torda managed three first-half shots for the Horned Frogs, one of three TCU players to log multiple shots in the opening period (K. Castleberry - 2; K. Halverson - 2).
Memphis got its best chance in the 25th minute from Christabel Oduro. The freshman from Brampton, Ontario broke into the box and got off a header, but it was blocked by TCU and the game remained scoreless going into halftime.
Memphis's last 3-0 loss came against Miami on Sept. 7, 2008, at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Lady Tigers have not lost back-to-back matches since dropping two straight against LSU and Samford in Sept. 2007.
The Lady Tigers open Conference USA play next weekend as they travel out west for contests against Colorado College (Sept. 24) and UTEP (Sept. 26).
