Adam McClain went 3-for-4, with two doubles, two runs and four RBI, while senior reliever Marc Ashley struck out a career-high seven to help Memphis to an 11-5 victory over UCA in non-conference action at FedExPark, Tuesday evening. The Tigers even their season record to 24-24, while UCA falls to 15-32-1.
Ashley, working in early relief of starter Marcus Barnes, earned the win for the Tigers. The senior righthander allowed a run on one hit in four innings.
McClain was just one of five Tigers to reach multiple hits in the contest. Chad Zurcher collected three hits and drove in two. Drew Martinez, Tyler Huelsing Trey Wiedman and Shawn Ablett had two hits each. Memphis out-hit UCA 17-8. Huelsing, Wilson also scored twice.
UCA got on the board first, in the first, with a two-run home run by Clay Washington. They took a 3-1 lead in the second on a solo blast off the bat of Bobby Prichett.
But Memphis answered with a run in the first and then struck for a seven-spot to take control of the contest in the second. The Tigers sent 11 batters to the plate and banged out seven hits in the inning. Playing in his first game since April 13, Ablett knotted the tilt at 2-2 with a solo home run off the FedExPark board in left centerfield. That set off a streak five-straight hits for the Tigers. Robby Graham followed Ablett's blast with a single. Martinez added an RBI-double and Zurcher lifted a two-run shot to left to make it 5-3. McClain capped the inning with a two-run double to give the Tigers a five-run cushion.
The Bears crossed a run in the fourth to cut the Tigers' lead to four runs, but Memphis answered with two runs in the home half of the inning on McClain's second RBI-double and a run-scoring single by Ablett.
McClain came through again--this time in the sixth. Jacob Wilson was hit by a pitch for the second time and then stole second. With Wilson in scoring position, McClain flipped a single into rightfield to bring Wilson home to make it 11-5.
Evan Cox was tagged with the loss in his first start of the year. The righthander was touched for five runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Memphis will look to wrap up its 2010 home schedule on a positive note when it battles Murray State in the home series finale on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
