Postgame Quotes
#19/19 Memphis (4-0) 70, LSU (2-2) 61
Nov. 21, 2010
BancorpSouth Arena -- Tupelo, Miss.
Memphis Head Coach Josh Pastner
On his daughter's first game and the crowd
Payton's undefeated. She has a better winning percentage than her father, so she can continue to come to games. I want to give a shout out to the entire Tiger fan base for being here at this game; they gave us a great lift once again. As I've said many times, you all are the best fans in America--the sixth man that we needed--so thank you.
Opening remarks about play on the floor
It's a great win for us. We didn't play real well to be honest with you, but we got the "W." They've got some athletes, and I was really proud of our inside guys. Even though we got out-rebounded by two, that's not indicative of the job we did on the glass because I felt we did a great job on the defensive glass in key times, making sure we got stops. Especially Malcolm White and Storm Warren (of LSU) who combined for seven rebounds--last game they both had a double-double. The guys who hurt us were the bench guys.
Talking about early mistakes (16 turnovers)
We had some really good looks in the first half that we missed. You make those and our assists are different; we have a little more assists. Chris Crawford had five great looks in the first half, so you have to tell him to keep shooting; he's too good of a shooter
I felt at times one of our Achilles heels has been our turnovers. Last year we averaged almost under 12 turnovers a game, but maybe that's because we had a more veteran group. The biggest thing is our 16 turnovers. That's 16 given-away possessions.
LSU Head Coach Trent Johnson
Opening Statement
It's frustrating for me. I have to do a better job of adjusting to how the game is being officiated. Garrett Green gave us a big lift off the bench in a big time physical atmosphere on the road. But I don't want to take anything away from the Memphis Tigers. They travel well; they're a physical team. It was definitely a very, very good college environment.
I have a wounded group, so we knew coming in we were going to have to do certain things well. If we did those things well, we were going to have a chance to win this game. We didn't get it done, and we just didn't get a bounce here or there.
Talk about the play in the second half.
Well, we ran some set stuff, and we had some guys come open. Ralston (Turner), Andre (Stringer)--the ball just didn't go down for them. We executed; set good screens. We put them in a situation--I think when we were up we had a couple of touch fouls. We had to play Jelan Courtney out of position because everybody else had foul trouble. But for the most part, it's hard to play on the road against a team like this if you can't be aggressive at times.
All that being said, we have to get back in the gym and practice. We will continue to play this way, and we will get better as they year progresses. We just have to stay positive amongst ourselves and work hard and continue to clean up the things that are correctable, and we're going to have a good basketball team.
