LEXINGTON, Ken. – The Memphis Tigers got their first point towards the C-USA Standings, drawing with Kentucky, 1-1, Sunday, in two overtimes. At 3-8-1 (0-4-1 in conference), the Tigers kept their chances for a C-USA Tournament berth alive.
“It’s always good to get a point at their place,” said Memphis head coach Richie Grant. “They’re a strong side and even though we had good chances, it’s good to come away with something.”
Memphis got on the board early, with freshman midfielder Jamal Keene rebounding redshirt freshman Mark Sherrod’s header off the post and putting it past Kentucky keeper Tyler Beadle.
It’s the earliest goal scored by a Tiger in 2010 and the only blemish on Beadle’s evening; the freshman made four saves over the subsequent 108 minutes.
It’s just the fourth time the Tigers have gotten on the board first; Memphis is now 2-1-0 when scoring the first goal.
Keene had two more shots on net, back to back, in the 24th minute that Beadle turned away.
“Jamal had a strong week of practice,” said Grant. “He worked on finishing and got his first goal and had a couple of really good chances.”
Kentucky’s Charles Pettys summoned the equalizer for the Wildcat’s in the 69th minute, taking the pass from Josh Albers at the far post and putting it past Memphis sophomore keeper Jordan Leedle to tie it up.
Leedle finished with five saves during the match.
The teams were unable to push across anymore goals in regulation, even though Kentucky doubled up the Tigers in shots, finishing with 22 to Memphis’ 11.
A 90th-minute shot by Kentucky’s Shaun Deliberato was turned away by Leedle and led to overtime.
In the two 10-minute overtime frames, each squad had a shot on net, with Memphis’ Parker Duncan putting one on goal in the 95th minute and Kentucky’s Charles Pettys firing a prayer at the net in the waning seconds, but both went wanting and the match ended in a draw.
Kentucky treads water at 4-6-2 (1-1-2) for the 2010 season.
“We put together a good effort tonight,” said Grant. “We’re coming together now, and it’s better to be good late than early.”
Memphis will get a week of rest and training before hosting fifth-ranked SMU, Saturday, at 7 p.m. It will be ‘Fiesta de Futbol’ night at Mike Rose; the first 100 fans will receive coupons for free tacos at Taco Bell and admission is free for all.
