Tigers Capture Win Over Murray State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis (3-1) swept the Murray State Racers, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Wellworx Sporting Club in East Memphis. By picking up their third win the Tigers have produced their best start since the 2004 season when they also started with a record of 3-1.
"It was another solid team performance for us today," said Memphis Head Coach Paul Goebel. "I feel that we are playing very well early in the season. I am excited about the next few weeks of competition."
The Tigers opened the match by sweeping their doubles opponents. The No. 1 doubles duo of Jorge Vazquez and Charlie Ramsay picked up their third dual win of the season, upending Murray State's tandem of Ben Clos and Jose Berardo, 8-1. At the No. 2 doubles slot, Spencer Heflin and Leon Nasemann won 8-3 over Luka Milicevic and Renaldo Domoney. Jordan Smith and Benedikt Fischer picked up a victory at the No. 3 doubles position, defeating Mason Johnson and Jadir Semensin, 8-1.
In singles play, Vazquez, currently ranked the 102nd-best singles player in the nation, improved his record to 5-1 defefating Clos, a transfer from Louisville, 6-2, 6-2. Vazquez has upended the 23rd and 26th-ranked singles player so far this season.
At No. 2 singles, Nasemann defeated Milicevic, 6-1, 6-3, evening his dual singles record to 2-2 in his second year as a member of the Memphis tennis squad.
Ramsay, a junior from Chattanooga, Tenn., won the first set of his match over Domoney, 6-2, before his opponent forced a tiebreaker by winning the second set, 6-2. Ramsay came away with the victory, winning the tiebreaker, 10-8.
In the No. 4 singles slot, Benedikt Fischer moved his dual singles record to 3-1, upending Murray State's Jose Berardo, 6-4, 6-1.
Michael Hayes, a junior from London, England, played his second match of the season on Saturday after transferring from Brunel University mid-season. Hayes defeated Johnson, 6-3, 6-1.
At the No. 6 singles spot, freshman K.C. Griffin, a Millington native, upended Semensin, 6-2, 6-1.
The U of M will next take the court against the Morehead State Eagles on Fri., Feb. 6, at Wellworx in a match that was postponed last Thursday due to the severe weather near Morehead, Ky.
