BURLINGTON, Vt. -
The men's soccer team from the University of Memphis fell in yet another 1-0 overtime loss on Sunday afternoon, when they lost at the hands of the Vermont Catamounts in the Tigers' final game of the Smith Barney/Nike Soccer Classic in Burlington, Vt. The Tigers lost their previous game to New Hampshire in a 1-0 overtime loss. Memphis is now 1-3 on the young season, while Vermont improved their record to 2-0-2. The Catamounts clinched a share of the Smith Barney/Nike Soccer Classic title with the win.
Memphis got two opportunities at the goal in the first half. The most dangerous came when Brian Farrell, a junior from Dunboyne, Ireland, attempted a point blank shot against Vermont goalie Roger Scully. Scully collected the ball for a save. The Catamounts' senior goalie from East Lyme, Ct., made four saves all-in-all in Sunday afternoon's match.
Late in the second half, Farrell tried to take advantage of yet another chance for a Tiger goal. The forward had another clear path for a goal, but headed it over the cross bar.
Later in the second half, freshman midfielder Cody McCoy had a volley from outside the 18-yard-line, that went above the bar. Vermont countered that attempt soon after when Jordan Crasilneck attempted a shot from 15 yards out, on which Michael Goodlett, the Tigers' junior goalkeeper, made the save.
The match would go into overtime. Five minutes into the extra period, Crasilneck took a corner kick from the left side and found Ryan White who flicked the ball over to the Catamounts' senior captain, Jake McFadden who put the ball to the far side of the goal to give Vermont the win. The goal was McFadden's first in his career.
"I thought that our team played a lot better match today than we did on Friday," said Head Coach Richie Grant. "It was a difficult way to lose a game, but the ball just broke off of the corner kick for Vermont and they got the goal to win the game."
Two Tigers, McCoy and Goodlett, were named to the Smith Barney/Nike Soccer Classic All-Tournament team. Goodlett made five saves in Sunday's game and five saves on Friday against New Hampshire, while only allowing two goals in two games.
"Michael (Goodlett) is getting better with each and every game that he plays," Grant said. "He did everything that he could do today to keep a clean slate in goal, but unfortunately he gave up the one goal."
Grant also commented on the play of McCoy, who came off the bench to provide a spark for the Tigers
"Cody (McCoy) was really a good addition to our team in the two tournament games this weekend," Grant said. "He really covered a lot of ground for us out there."
Memphis attempted eight shots on the game. Six of the shots were taken by Farrell.
The Tigers will continue their streak of tournaments next weekend when they travel to the UAB "Soccer For A Cure" Classic in Birmingham, Ala. Memphis will face Western Illinois on Friday, Sept. 12 at 3:30. The Leathernecks are coming off of an upset of No. 17 Bradley. The Tigers will continue in the tournament, when they face the UC-Irvine Anteaters at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14.
