Memphis Football Notes
Vs Louisville
October 10, 2008
* Captains for Memphis were seniors Maurice Jones, Will Hudgens, Antonio McCoy
* Carlos Singleton extended his receiving streak to 28 games with his 14-yard reception early in the first quarter. Singleton
ranks second all-time at Memphis with the 28-game streak, and is behind Duke Calhoun who extended his streak to 31 games
in the first quarter.
* Duke Calhoun caught a 16-yard strike from Arkelon Hall in the first quarter to extend his receiving streak to 31 games.
The streak is a school record and entering today's game, Calhoun was ranked 11th nationally.
* Running back Curtis Steele fumbled the ball on 2nd-and-8 from the Louisville 28, marking the first fumble this season for a
Memphis back. Memphis had only turned the ball over on fumble once this season and that was by QB Arkelon Hall. Up
until this point, Tiger running backs had carried the ball 159 times and had not lost the ball on a fumble. The turnover did not
prove to be costly as Louisville QB Hunter Cantwell tossed an interception on the very next play. Memphis entered today's
game tied for second nationally in fumbles lost.
* Cornerback Deante' Lamar came up with a big turnover for the Tigers when he came up with an interception immediately
following a Memphis fumble in the first quarter. Lamar picked off Hunter Cantwell at the Louisville 27 and made a four-yard
return. The Tigers scored as a result of the turnover to go up 7-0 with just over five minutes remaining in the first.
* Quarterback Arkelon Hall made a one-yard run to the endzone to give Memphis the 7-0 advantage with 5:42 remaining in
the first quarter. It was Hall's second career touchdown run.
* True freshman running back Brandon Ross caught his first pass late in the first quarter. He hauled in the 10-yard toss from
Arkelon Hall. Ross, who was originally expected to redshirt, saw his first game action last weekend versus UAB for injured
back Charlie Jones. He also had three carries for 28 yards and a long run of 15 yards tonight.
* The Tigers held a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, marking the third time this season that Memphis had led at the end
of the first. The other times were versus Arkansas State and Nicholls State.
* Carlos Singleton caught a 48-yard pass in the second quarter to mark his fourth 40-yard reception of the season. He tied his
season high as he also had a 48-yard reception last week versus UAB. Singleton finished the game with five receptions for a
team-high 83 yards.
* Maurice Jones tossed his first touchdown pass of the year when he took the lateral from Arkelon Hall and then threw the
one-yard touchdown pass to Hall in the corner of the end zone to give Memphis a 14-7 lead with 7:50 remaining in the
second quarter. It was Jones' third career completion; his first of the season. He is 3-of-6 passing during his four-year
career. Jones also had three receptions for 24 yards in today's game.
* Louisville took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to quickly knot the score, 14-14. It was the first time since
versus USF in 2003 that Memphis had given up a kickoff return for a score. USF made a 96-yard return for the touchdown in
that game.
* At the end of the second quarter, Louisville blocked Vinny Zaccario's 47-yard field goal attempt and made a 60-yard return
for a touchdown. This is the second time this season that Memphis has had two FGs blocked and returned for touchdowns.
The last time was on a 32-yard attempt by Matt Reagan in the Nicholls State contest. The last time that Memphis had two
field goal attempts blocked in a single season was in 1997, and neither of those was returned.
* The last time that the Tiger special teams unit allowed two touchdowns in a single game was in 1988 when Ole Miss
blocked two punts and scored on both.
* Brian Hall logged a 42-yard reception at the start of the third quarter. The reception was the first of his career, and led to a
Tiger touchdown two plays later.
* Earnest Williams caught a seven-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to pull Memphis within seven, 28-21, with 12:59
remaining in the third quarter. It was Williams' 14th career touchdown reception; his sixth this season. Williams currently
leads the Tiger receivers in touchdown receptions with six. He finished the game with five receptions for 52 yards.
* Quarterback Arkelon Hall rushed for a TD, passed for two TDs and caught a TD reception in today's game. He finished
the game having completed 33 of 55 passes for 350 yards and two touchdowns. The last Tiger QB to accomplish this feat
was Danny Wimprine versus USF in 2002. Wimprine threw two touchdowns, had a five-yard run for a score and caught a
six-yard TD pass from Darron White. Hall also threw for over 300 yards for the third time this season.
* Redshirt freshman Cam Baker caught his first pass this season when he hauled in the six-yard offering from Arkelon Hall
in the third quarter. Baker has played in four games this season.
* Carlos Singleton caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Arkelon Hall with 1:51 remaining in the third quarter for his
second TD reception of the season. The touchdown tied the score, 28-28. The play was reviewed and the call on the field
stood. Singleton now ties for third all-time at Memphis with his 16 receiving TDs. He moved up one spot in the Memphis
all-time career reception leaders with 111 total catches and moved up two spots among the all-time leading receivers to fifth
with 1,672 career yards.
* The Tiger offense rolled off 481 yards of total offense in tonight's game to mark the seventh straight game this season that
Memphis has been over 400 yards. The Tigers have totaled more yards than their opponent in every game this year but the
UAB contest.
* Memphis held Louisville to 299 yards total offense, marking the second time this season the Tigers have held their
opponent to under 300 yards. The U of M held Nicholls State to 164 yards.
* QB Arkelon Hall fumbled the ball after being sacked at the Memphis 21 and Louisville's Johnny Patrick made the 21-yard
return for the touchdown. The last team to return a fumble for a TD against Memphis was Arkansas State in 2004. The two
fumbles lost in today's game was the first multiple fumble contest for the Tigers since the U of M lost two fumbles against
Tulsa in 2005.
* Alton Starr led the team with a career-high 14 tackles in the game. He leads the team in tackles this season with 51 total stops. Jeremy Longstreet also had a career high in tackles with 13.
