EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Memphis men's soccer team traveled to Evansville this weekend and swept its tournament competition in a Friday-Sunday double header to win the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic. With a 2-1 win over Mercer today, the Tigers improved to 4-1-2 overall and return to Memphis to host Centenary College next weekend.
"I'm really pleased with our performance this weekend," said Memphis coach Richie Grant. "The squad showed a lot of maturity today."
Junior midfielder Tripp Harkins scored the first Tiger goal and his first of the season on a corner kick from Sean Goulding in the 13th minute of the match. The lead held through halftime until the Bears' Ian Cameron knotted the score at 1-1.
Tiger forward Jared Britcher scored the game-winner with under 10 minutes to play. Britcher received a long kick out from senior keeper Tyler Strom and beat one defender and the Bears' keeper for his fourth goal of the season, his second of the weekend. Britcher's two goal-two assist performance earned him the offensive MVP honors for the tournament.
Junior defender Michael Coburn was named the tournament's defensive MVP for his weekend spent organizing the Tiger back four from the center back position.
"He was really up to the challenge," Grant said. "Today he marked one of Mercer's top players. He just did a great job all weekend."
Mercer out-shot Memphis 13-8, but Tyler Strom's five save kept the Bears at bay for the win.
"It's important to note how great a job that Nick (Glaser) and Remco (De Jong) are doing to help get these lads ready," said Grant.
Tyler Strom and Tripp Harkins were the Tigers' other selection to the all tournament team.
