MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's soccer team beat the visiting Bulldogs of Mississippi State, 5-0. Senior Harumi Someya had two goals in the match to lead all Lady Tigers. Memphis is on a four game winning streak, having won one game on the road and three at home, all in seven days. The Lady Tigers are undefeated at home this season, posting a 4-0 record.
Someya nailed a ball from the right hand side with a double assist from Brittany Baldwin and Emiko Schwab two minutes into the game, to give the Lady Tigers an early lead. Someya scored another goal to start off the second half, making it five goals for her so far in the season and her third goal of the week.
"I thought today was another great win, against a quality opponent," said Coach Brooks Monaghan. "It's great to get a comfortable lead early and be able to play everyone and today we were able to do that."
Sophomore Laura Laufenberg scored her first goal of the season at the 15 minute mark, to give Memphis a 2-0 lead going into halftime. The Memphis defense held the Bulldogs to only one shot the entire first half.
Memphis scored three goals in the second half to extend their lead to 5-0. Junior Kylie Hayes had a goal and an assist in the second half, while Freshman Amanda Olszewski made a shot from ten yards out, to give the Lady Tigers their fifth goal in the match.
"It has been a long week, having had some internal issues, but we have come together and it has made us a stronger team," said Monaghan. "It's tough to play four games in seven days, but we were able to come out victorious in all of the games. I am very proud of the team right now, we are at a high and we need to keep it going."
The Lady Tigers take a week off before returning to action on Sunday, Sept. 30. They face the Bears of Missouri State at 1 p.m. at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
