MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The men's soccer team hosted Florida International (3-13-2, 2-7-0 C-USA) in both teams' final regular season match before heading to Birmingham, Ala., next week for the Conference USA Championship. The Tigers took the match into overtime for the sixth time this season, and ended their season at home with a 1-0 win in overtime.
Memphis (10-4-4, 3-2-3 C-USA) opened the first half with two great scoring opportunities on a Sean Goulding free kick and a Jordan Lynn shot that slammed off the right post. The Tigers managed one more shot on goal before the teams retired to their locker rooms at the break with no score.
The match remained scoreless through the second period. The Golden Panthers managed three shots on goal in the second half, but Tyler Strom was there each time to deny them the lead.
Two minutes and three seconds into the first overtime period, Ryan Ruble gave the Tigers the win with his sixth team-leading sixth goal of the season. Jordan Lynn took the ball into the corner, crossed the ball into the box, where Brian Farrell touched it to Ruble, who then buried it just inside the near post.
"It was a great goal," said Memphis coach Richie Grant. "I'm glad we got it early in extra time. I thought we played really well tonight."
The Tigers will travel to Birmingham, Ala., next week and face South Carolina as either the fourth or fifth seed in the opening round of the Conference USA Championship on Wednesday.
"We've had some real close games with South Carolina, but tonight prepared us well. I thought tonight was very tight. Both teams were stingy with chances on goal, and we'll expect more of that on Wednesday."
