MEMPHIS, Tenn. - No. 25 Memphis welcomed South Carolina to Mike Rose Soccer Complex tonight for a Conference USA showdown between two teams that pride themselves on defense. Their reputations proved warranted as the match saw only eight shots in the first period and remained scores through the 57th minute, when both teams found the back of the net.
The Gamecocks' Blake Brettschneider put his head on Schuyler Reardon's throw in to break the scoreless game. Brettschneider elevated himself above the crowd in the box to stick the ball past Tiger keeper Tyler Strom.
Memphis responded 28 seconds later when Brian Farrell took to kickoff to the baseline and found Michael Coburn at the top of the box. Coburn took the feed and drove it past Carolina's Jimmy Maurer with his second goal of the year to knot the score at one all. The quick response was the Tigers' third such rebounding score in their last three games.
"I was delighted, really with our response," said Memphis coach Richie Grant. "I'm really impressed with our ability to get back in the game so quickly."
The stingy defense returned and allowed only three shots on goal without a score through the end of regulation.
USC managed the lone shot of the first overtime period, but again both defenses shut down any good opportunity to end the game. Carolina nearly ended it with a one-on-one look in the second extra frame, but Tyler Strom came out of the net to make the biggest save of the night.
"It was a game winning save," said Grant. "That saved us two points."
Jared Britcher missed netting the game winner with 44 seconds left. Michael Coburn headed Ryan Ruble's throw in to Britcher, who missed the top corner by inches.
"I was real pleased with the way we played on both sides of the football tonight," Grant said. "I thought we looked very comfortable."
The Tigers earned their fourth draw of the season and move to 7-2-4 overall, 2-0-3 in C-USA competition. The Gamecocks are now 8-4-1, 2-1-1 in league play.
Memphis returns to action at Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Wednesday, as the Tigers host Central Arkansas at 7 p.m.
