Huntington, W.Va. - The Memphis men's soccer team earned its second conference victory tonight with a 2-1 win at Marshall to improve to 7-2-3 overall and 2-0-2 in Conference USA play. Kevin Walsh and Thomas Hyland each scored in the second frame to give the Tigers three points in the conference standings and move them into a tie for first place, pending the outcome of the SMU-UAB match tonight.
After a scoreless first half in which Memphis rattled off seven shots and allowed only four by The Herd, Kevin Walsh found the back of the net in the 68th minute after receiving a touch pass from Jared Britcher which he drove past Marshall's keeper for his team-leading fifth goal.
Marshall's Daniele brothers evened the score with John's put back after Nick's first attempt was saved but not secured by Tyler Strom.
The Tigers regained the lead 35 seconds later with Thomas Hyland's first goal of the season. The Herd defense cleared a Memphis corner kick, and Michael Coburn headed the ball back into the box, where Jared Britcher flicked it off his head to Hyland, who finished the opportunity with a header of his own for the game-winning goal.
Britcher's two-assist night extends his team-leading point total to 13 (four goals, 5 assists). Tyler Strom recorded five saves to earn his sixth victory of the season.
Memphis returns home to host South Carolina Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
