MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Arkansas' Kim Schleif knocked in a goal at the 82-minute mark to break a 0-0 tie and give the Lady Razorbacks a 1-0 win over the Memphis women's soccer team Sunday at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Memphis (4-4) drops to 0-4 all-time versus Arkansas and 1-3 at home on the year.
"We certainly had the opportunities to win today," said Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan. "Until we start to capitalize on our scoring opportunities, we're going to struggle. I think we need to play smarter and harder."
The first half of Sunday's contest took to the same form as most of the Lady Tigers recent matches, with Memphis and Arkansas trading possession for most of the period. The Lady Tigers once again had as many scoring chances as their opponent but were unable to take the advantage.
Memphis goalkeeper, Isabel Briones made several good saves during the opening period to keep Arkansas scoreless heading to halftime. The first half saw the Lady Tigers get off 11 shots on offense, five of which they put on goal.
The match remained even throughout most of the second half, with neither team able to mount a serious offensive threat. Finally, with 8 minutes remaining in the match Schief knocked in a feed from Christina Burger to give Arkansas the lead.
The Lady Tigers immediately came back on the counter attack. Memphis forward Kylie Hayes made a great attempt on a header with two minute remaining, but the ball caught the bottom of the crossbar and bounced down into the box, where it was grabbed by Arkansas' keeper Carrie Dillsaver.
At that point the Lady Razorbacks were able to move the ball into Memphis territory and run out the clock. Now, Memphis must once again regroup with only one game remaining until conference play.
"There are still a lot of goals out there for us to achieve," said Monagahan. "We can be a very good team, but we just haven't turned that corner yet."
The Lady Tigers will have one more opportunity to prepare for conference play Friday, when they travel to Missouri State for a 7 p.m. match.
