MEMPHIS -
The Memphis cross country team took advantage of a fast course Saturday night during the Brooks Memphis Twilight Meet at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex, and eight out of 10 Tiger runners set new personal best times.
"Everyone ran exceptionally well tonight," said cross-country coach Mike Power. "We've been talking about improving every week, and today the team really did it. The course was a little fast, but they really went out there and ran well."
In the women's 5k, Emily Malinowski battled through leg problems that bothered her all week in training to finish in under 19 minutes for the first time this season. The sophomore's time of 18:54 was good enough for a 31st place overall finish.
Senior Mary Claire Dake posted her best time of the year with a 19:25, as did Becca McMahon and Kimberly McVeigh who ran 19:36 and 20:26 respectively.
Eryka Morris' time of 22:22 shattered her former best time by more than a full minute.
On the men's side Tiger runner Juan Arboleda took the highest overall finish, coming in 80th with a time of 27:10.
Sophomore Geoff Standen and senior Avi Shaposhnik turned in respective personal bests of 27:24 and 27:48.
The most impressive performances may have come from Sam James and Nick Bussey, who each blew away their final personal bests by an unheard of four minutes. James ran a 28:43, while Bussey posted a time of 28:55.
The team will hit the road again in two weeks, traveling to Jonesboro, Ark. for the Arkansas State Sweepstakes on Oct. 21.
