TEMPE, Ariz. - Holy Cross University scored 46 points in the paint and converted 27 Memphis turnovers to 39 points in a 91-66 Crusader victory in the consolation game of the Arizona State/Wells Fargo Classic, Saturday.
Holy Cross started working on the Lady Tiger inside defense from the tip, with starting center Kaitlin Foley putting up 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the first half, while fellow Crusader Brittany Keil also added 10.
The Lady Tigers scored just two field goals in the first 11 minutes of the game, as the Crusaders found themselves quickly up 29-6 by the nine minute mark. At the end of the half, Memphis trailed 42-24 as Holy Cross shot 45.5 percent in the first half after scoring 20 points in the paint, while the Lady Tigers fired just 26.7 percent from the field.
In the second half, Memphis' defense initially slowed down the Crusader scorers, but once the Crusaders went back inside, the Lady Tigers posts got into foul trouble.
Paris Leonard led Memphis with 16 points, while Devin Necaise added 15. Ashley Howard scored 11 points with 12 rebounds in the loss.
Memphis returns home to host UT-Martin, Wednesday, at 7 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
