Memphis, Tenn.-- - Freshman Dayton O'Brien made his first collegiate goal a memorable one as it propelled the University of Memphis men's soccer team to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over TCU Friday at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. O'Brien, a Memphis native, blasted a penalty kick past Horned Frogs'goalkeeper Michael LaHoud in the third minute of the second extra period to give Memphis (1-0, 1-0 C-USA) a victory in its season and Conference USA opener.

The game seemed in hand for the Tigers well into the second half until TCU mounted a late rally that started when Dustin Sitar scored the Horned Frogs' first goal with just under 13 minutes to play. Sitar's goal cut the UM lead in half and J.J. Strong then tied the game at two for the visitors in the 84th minute when he finished a cross from Nick Browne.

The Tigers had a golden opportunity in the first overtime when freshmen Daniel Dobson and J.R. Williams had two point-blank attempts on goal, but LaHoud fended off both attempts with diving saves. LaHoud made three saves in the first overtime which helped get TCU into the second overtime. However, LaHoud's heroics would come to an end when a foul by TCU midfielder Carrington Brown in the penalty box resulted in the eventual game-winning penalty strike by O'Brien.

"I am pleased with the outcome," head coach Richie Grant said. "We played well at times, but what a great experience to realize that we have to preserve a lead better than that. The squad deserves credit though, for digging in and getting the job done."

Memphis built a 2-0 lead at the half with a pair of goals by freshman Daniel Ronan and sophomore Reid Greenslade. Ronan put the Tigers on top with their first goal of the season when he scored unassisted in the 25th minute. Greenslade then gave the home team a two-goal cushion when he scored on a feed from senior Kirk Ricketts with just over six minutes remaining in the half.

Junior Clark Talley had to make just three saves in the contest to pick up the victory for the Tigers who outshot the visiting Frogs 24-12 including a 9-0 effort in the two overtimes. LaHoud ended up with nine saves for TCU.

Memphis returns to action when the team will host the Memphis/Diadora Tournament Sept. 6-7 at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Tigers will be in action in the two-game tournament Friday against San Francisco at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday against Northeastern also at 7:30 p.m.
