DeAngelo Williams Signs Scholarship With Memphis

DeAngelo Williams, the top running back in the state of Arkansas in 2001 and the 25th rated running back prospect in the nation according to SuperPrep Magazine, has signed a National Letter-of-Intent with The University of Memphis. Williams becomes the U of M's 26th member of the Tigers' class of 2002. "We are very pleased that DeAngelo has decided to attend The University of Memphis," said Tiger head coach Tommy West. "He is a very talented back who has a great future in college football." The 5'10, 195 pound speedster was named to SuperPrep Football Magazine's All-America and All-Region Team in 2001 and was rated as the number two overall prospect in Arkansas by SuperPrep. Williams was selected as the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette 2001 Offensive Player of the Year and was tabbed as a member of the Associated Press Arkansas Super Team in 2001. Williams rushed for a single season record 2,204 yards and 34 touchdowns at Wynne High School during the 2001 campaign and averaged 10.4 yards per carry. He helped lead Wynne High School to the state 4A championship and amassed 939 yards rushing in four state playoff games, including 194 yards on 24 attempts in the state championship game against Stuttgart. Williams scored two rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown and one return touchdown in the state championship game. The two-year letterman gained 1,044 yards rushing as a junior and scored 14 rushing touchdowns. He missed most of his sophomore season due to a broken bone in his foot. In addition to his football exploits, Williams excels in track and holds the state 4A record in the 100 meters with an electronically timed 10.81. He helped Wynne High School to a second-place finish in the 2001 state track championships, winning the 200 meters with a time of 22.57 and placing second in the 100 meters with a time of 10.93.
