Volleyball's Season Comes to an End

CHICAGO, Ill. - The University of Memphis volleyball team (19-15, 4-9 C-USA) managed just three kills on 17 attacks in a fifth and deciding game, while Charlotte (18-14) hit .250 and downed seven kills on 16 attacks to win 3-2 in first round play at the Conference USA tournament, Friday.
Junior Brittany Barnett (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) was one of three Tigers to down double-digit kills, finishing with a game-high 23 kills. Sophomore Tiara Gilkey (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonsville) added 19 kills while Nancy Nellans (South Bend, Ind./St. Josephs) added 10 kills. Four Tigers tallied double-digit digs, led by 19 from sophomore Heather Watts (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline). Freshman Lauren Berg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) had 14, while Barnett and Gilkey added 13 and 12 respectively.
Charlotte won the opening game 30-28, before Memphis rallied back to win game two 30-27. Charlotte added another 30-28 win in game three before Memphis battled back with a 30-28 win of their own to force a fifth game, which the 49ers won 15-8.
Memphis finishes its season on a three-match losing streak, including two 3-2 losses against league schools.
Charlotte now advanced to face No. 3 seed Cincinnati.
