CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Tiger volleyball team (17-11, 2-6 C-USA) tangled with host Cincinnati, but fell short of the upset, falling 3-1, Friday night.
The match was a battle early, with Cincinnati winning game one 33-31 before the Tigers bounced back to win 30-28 in game two. But with the match tied at one apiece, the Bearcats adjusted to the Tiger offense and held Memphis to a .060 hitting percentage in a 30-21 game three win and a .154 hitting percentage in a 30-22 game four win.
The Tigers had another balanced offensive outing for the fifth straight match, with junior Brittany Barnett (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) leading the team with 19 kills. Sophomore Tiara Gilkey (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonsville) added 18 kills while freshman Nancy Nellans (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph) and junior Shella Neba (Aurora, Colo./St. Mary's) each added 12 kills. Barnett also led the defense with 15 digs, while sophomore Heather Watts (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) added 12 digs and led the offense with 63 assists. Nellans and freshman libero Lauren Berg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) each added 10 digs in the Tigers' first loss in five matches.
Julie DuPont led Cincinnati with 24 kills, while Rachel Torblaa added 18. Trish Ladusaw and Bonita Wise downed 15 and 10 kills, respectively.
The Tigers are on the road swing without head coach Carrie Yerty, who remained in Memphis because she is close to her due date of her second child. First assistant coach Jenni Rosselli has taken over Yerty's coaching responsibilities for this road trip.
The Tigers now travel to Louisville to face the Cardinals, Saturday, at 7 p.m.
