MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A nine-run inning by Middle Tennessee in the top half of the fourth was too much for Memphis to overcome during a rain-soaked game on Wednesday evening. Unfortunately, the University of Memphis Tiger baseball team (13-10) dropped a 13-9 decision to the visiting Blue Raiders of MTSU after committing four errors, three of which occurred in the fourth inning.
Both teams did hit the ball considerably better in this outing, combining for 28 total hits with the Blue Raiders accounting for 15. Barrett Smith (White Station HS) went 3-for-4 for Memphis, including a two-run homer, a double, a run scored and five RBI.
Memphis used two consecutive singles from Smith and Jay Fik (CBHS) in the bottom of the first, to drive in the Tigers first two runs of the game. Middle Tennessee then countered with a two-run double in the second by Josh Renick which tied the score at two. The Tigers kept rolling during the bottom of the second after Kyle Scott (Germantown HS) smashed a two-run bomb over the wall in left-center which gave Memphis a 4-2 advantage. In the top of the third, the Blue Raiders narrowed the gap after scoring a run which made the score 4-3, entering the bottom half of the inning.
The Tigers managed to score one more run with a bases-loaded walk by Bill Edwards (Evangelical Christian) in the bottom of the third, making the score 5-3. The fourth inning however was unkind to Memphis, as MTSU rallied for nine runs off three hits and three errors by the Tigers (which also included three hit batsmen) and the score was then, 12-5. The Tigers began to claw their way back in the bottom half of the inning when Smith connected for a two-run blast over the wall in left-center which narrowed the Blue Raider lead by five, 12-7.
MTSU added one more run and Memphis came through with two more before the game ended 13-9 in favor of the Blue Raiders.
Jason Kuhn (2-1) got the win for MTSU, allowing only four earned off four hits while fanning five.
Jason Wiedmeyer (3-4) took the loss for Memphis, surrendering seven earned runs off five Blue Raider hits.
Memphis will now travel to Tampa, Fla. for a three-game C-USA series with the Bulls of South Florida. The games will be played on Friday, March 30th at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 31st at 12 p.m. and Sunday, April 1st at 12 p.m. All games are CST.
