MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis Tiger baseball team (13-9) knocked off the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee (18-5) on Tuesday evening, by a score of 10-1.
Neither team hit the ball well, as both teams finished with five hits each but four errors by Middle Tennessee proved costly for the Blue Raiders.
The Tigers capitalized on a series of walks issued by Blue Raider starting pitcher Jason Moates during the bottom of the first when Tyler Shelton hit a sacrifice-fly to right which scored two runs and put Memphis ahead early, 2-0. The biggest inning however occured in the fifth when Memphis erupted with four runs off two hits which increased their lead to 7-0. The Tigers came back with three more runs to pad the lead and eventually sew up their 13th win of the season which in the process also snapped a three-game losing skid this past weekend to C-USA leader Houston.
Barrett Smith went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, two runs scored and four RBI. Gabe Interiano was 2-for-4 with two singles, three runs scored and one RBI.
Ryan O'Malley (3-1) collected his third win of the year and allowed zero runs off two hits while striking out two, in six innings of work. Layne Dawson came on in relief duty and allowed one earned off three hits while striking out four, for his first save of the year.
Moates took his first loss of the year, allowing four earned off two hits while fanning six and walking four.
These same two teams face-off again tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. Nat Buring Stadium is the site.
