Memphis Falls To Southern Mississippi

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Vandarel Jones scored 22 points and Elvin Mims came off the bench to score 22 as Southern Mississippi defeated Memphis 74-55 Wednesday night.
The Golden Eagles (20-7, 10-5 Conference USA) have won four straight and pulled into a tie with the Tigers (16-12, 10-5) for the lead in C-USA's National Division.
Southern Mississippi swept the season series with Memphis.
Kelly Wise led Memphis with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Shyrone Chatman had 11 points.
Leading 51-46 with about eight minutes left in the game, Southern Mississippi, led by Jones, pulled away. He scored eight straight points including a three-point play with 3:19 left that gave the Golden Eagles a 64-52 lead.
Southern Miss ended the game with a 23-9 run and shot 58 percent from the field in the second half.
Jones was 7-for-9 from the floor, had six rebounds and six blocked shots.
Mims hit six of nine 3-pointers, five in the second half, and grabbed eight rebounds. Mario Myles had 10 rebounds and seven points and David Wall added 11 points.
Southern Miss reached 20 wins for the first time since 1997-98.
