MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Kelly Wise scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Monday to lead Memphis to a 86-69 victory over the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Wise connected on 7-of-15 from the field as four players finished in double figures for the Tigers (15-11, 9-4 Conference USA). It marked Wise's 11th double-double of the season.
The victory stopped a two-game losing skid for Memphis and ended a two-game winning streak for UAB (14-11, 6-6).
UAB never lead after the 6:07 mark of the first half, and trailed by as many as 22 in the second period.
Shyrone Chatman finished with 15 for Memphis, while Courtney Trask and Shannon Forman chipped in 11 each, Forman adding a game-high seven assists.
Will Campbell and LeAndrew Bass led the Blazers with 12 each, while David Walker and Sidney Ball finished with 10 apiece. Walker had a game-high 13 rebounds.
Memphis led 33-29 at the half, despite missing its first nine shots and spotting the Blazers a 9-1 lead early. Memphis, playing its third game in five days, came out flat, and coach John Calipari spent the first 10 minutes screaming at his troops trying to motivate them.
The Tigers took their first lead of the game 18-17 with 7:29 left in the half, capping a 17-8 streak. A pair of free throws by Chatman with 6:07 left gave Memphis a 20-19 lead, and the Tigers never trailed again.
Memphis took its 4-point halftime advantage and built it into a 44-31 lead before the first media time out of the second half as the Tigers pushed the ball inside to Wise and Shamel Jones.
UAB would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
UAB shot 34.8 percent for the night, compared with 41.8 percent for Memphis.
