NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers received back-to-back strikes from senior forward Sean Fraser within a two-minute span and cruised for a 5-1 road victory over the Belmont Bruins, on Tuesday evening.
With the win, Memphis improves to 3-5-2 on the year.
Local CBHS products Justin Dyer and Justin Stralka and senior defender Chris Schmidt each registered a goal, while senior midfielder Ken Matsuba had a career-high three assists.
Fraser's dual-strike effort gives him six on the year and 33 for his career, placing him just one goal shy of tying former Tiger great Donal McDonagh, for third place on the U of M's all-time scoring list.
Dyer recorded his first goal as a Tiger during the 13th minute of the first half, off assists from Stephen Lewis (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) and Stralka. Fraser then gave the U of M a three-goal lead with consecutive strikes at the 42:22 and 43:50 marks, with Matsuba feeding the ball on both occassions.
Stralka and Schmidt would each follow Fraser's lead and opened up a five-goal advantage less than 20 minutes into the second period before the host Bruins escaped the shutout, when John Martin found the net in the 84th minute.
Memphis dominated the match from the beginning and went on to outshoot Belmont 25-6 while forcing Bruin keeper Matt Renfrow to make five saves. Tiger goalie Clark Talley improved to 2-1 on the year after sitting out the previous seven contests due to a broken foot and posted two saves in the win.
"It was a solid team performance," said head coach Richie Grant. "We seemed to be the better team for the majority of the match and received solid play from Sean, and both Justin Dyer and Justin Stralka. We needed a good result tonight after the Saint Louis match and it's good to see that our players are really starting to battle it out for (starting) positions and playing time."
The Tigers return home for a few days rest before heading to Milwaukee, Wisc. for a conference match with the Golden Eagles of Marquette on Sunday, October 14th. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start and will be played on the MU campus at Valley Fields.
