Tiger Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to DePaul

CHICAGO, ILL. - The University of Memphis Tiger Volleyball team dropped to 17-7 on the year, 5-7 in C-USA with a 3-1 loss to DePaul here Saturday evening.
DePaul defeated Memphis 34-32 and 30-24 in the first two games of the match, before Memphis managed to pick up a 30-28 win in the third game. DePaul came back in the fourth game with a 30-27 victory and the match advantage. The Blue Demons improved to 17-6 on the season and moved to 8-3 in Conference USA.
DePaul rallied from a 17-10 deficit in game one finishing off Memphis 34-32. The Blue Demons trailed the entire game until evening the score at 27-27. With Memphis ahead 32-21 the Demons rallied scoring the final three points of the game to get the win. Junior Katie Engel led the way for DePaul finishing the game with five kills.
Memphis jumped out to a 21-13 lead in the second game but couldn't hang on as DePaul rallied to win 30-24. The Blue Demons ran off six consecutive points to cut the deficit to 19-21. Memphis held a 24-23 lead, but DePaul finished the game off scoring the final seven points.
After dropping the third game, the Blue Demons came out hot in game four. DePaul jumped out to an early 9-5 lead before Memphis responded with a 9-2 run to take a 14-11 lead. Memphis held a 19-16 lead when DePaul went on a 5-0 run to take a 21-19 lead. The Tigers rallied to tie the game at 27-27, but the Blue Demons were too tough down the stretch scoring the final three points of the game to close out the match.
Senior Ginger Garrett led Memphis offensively with 18 kills and a .289 hitting mark. She also totaled 14 digs, one solo block and four assisted blocks. Senior Emily Eichmann and junior Brooke Chrisman followed Garrett offensively with 13 kills and 11 kills, respectively. Sophomore Shella Neba also recorded double digit kills with 10. Senior Amie Hamilton powered the offense with 60 assists and also led the defense with 19 digs.
Engel finished with 19 kills and 20 digs for DePaul, while hitting .317. DePaul senior Christa Dirr added 14 kills and senior Kara Jakusz finished with 75 assists.
The Tigers will travel to Martin, Tenn., next Tuesday to take on UT-Martin at 7 p.m. They will close out their home schedule next weekend when they host South Florida on Friday and UAB on Saturday. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Adrianne Ednonds, Ginger Garrett, Emily Eichmann and Amie Hamilton will be honored in a special Senior Day ceremonie before the UAB match.
