MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The Memphis Tigers lost some much needed ground on Sunday and fell to 1-3-1 in C-USA, after dropping a 2-1 road decision to the Marquette Golden Eagles, Sunday.
The Golden Eagles took control early in the sixth minute of action and withstood Memphis' equalizer which occured during the 24th minute, before eventually recording the game-winner less than 20 minutes later.
Memphis is now just 3-6-2 overall and find themselves in a must win situation this week, when they travel to Birmingham, Ala. for a midweek league tilt on Wednesday against the Blazers of UAB. Prior to this weekend, the Blazers were ranked second behind Saint Louis in C-USA and carried an unblemished record which had earned them a top 10 ranking.
Striker Lars Thorstensen recorded the Tigers' lone goal ofthe match at the 23:59 mark, but the U of M appeared destined to drop their second consecutive conference game after posting just two shots in the first period, prior to totaling just four throughout the entire contest.
Forward Sean Fraser was held in check along with the rest of Memphis' offense and finished with just one shot. Midfielder Ken Matsuba tallied his fifth assist of the season on Thorstensen's strike and has now recorded an assist in three consecutive matches.
Tiger keeper Clark Talley registered five saves in the loss and seemed to shoulder the majority of the workload compared to his counterpart for the Golden Eagles, goalkeeper Adam Ubert. Ubert went the entire match without a save until late in the second half when he turned away a golden opportunity for the Tigers, after Marquette was forced to play a man down during the final 12 minutes of regulation.
"We gave our best effort in a tight conference match," stated head coach Richie Grant. "We had a chance to win late in the game but Ubert made a critical save and preserved the win for them. On another day, maybe it goes in, but still, we didn't give ourselves enough chances."
The Tigers' conference bout with UAB will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. CDT. West Campus Field is the site.
