MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's soccer team opened its home schedule this evening at Echles field with a win over the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Three Tigers scored in the match, and freshman goalkeepers Katarina Wicksell and Kari Rawe combined for the first Lady Tiger shutout of the season.
Memphis went up early, when Jessica Gjertson took a pass from Becca Amrozowicz and beat a diving Monroe goalkeeper in the tenth minute of the game. Then, just before the half, senior defender Nicole Bates-Eamer rattled a free kick through the box and into the net to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 half time lead.
Memphis came out fast again in the second half when, in the 53rd minute of the game, senior forward Michelle Meduri tallied her first goal of the season off of a Gjertson pass. The goal provided unneeded cushion for the Lady Tigers, since a stellar defensive effort kept the Indians out of the nets for the entire game.
The victory brings the Lady Tigers to 2-1 for the season and is their second consecutive win. They will look to add to the streak Sunday afternoon, when they host Middle Tennessee at 4:30 at Echles field.
