St. Louis, Mo. - The University of Memphis baseball team (7-16, 1-3) got it's first road win and first C-USA win of the season Saturday afternoon, after knocking off the Billikens of Saint Louis (8-12, 2-3) 7-3. Led by an impressive outing by junior pitcher Jason Wiedmeyer, who retired the first seven batters he faced before giving up his first hit, the Tigers evened up this three-game series at one game a-piece.
Memphis would get things rolling in the top of the first, as sophomore second baseman Daniel Uggla ripped a one-out double off the left-field wall scoring sophomore center fielder Paul Reuer, to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead going into the bottom-half of the first inning. Memphis kept things going in the top of the third as senior shortstop Stephen Frix (White Station H.S.) hit a solo home run over the left-field wall, his first as a Tiger, and the score was then 2-0. The Tigers would keep rolling, as sophomore first baseman Jay Fik (Christian Brothers H.S.), hit a single down the first base line and drove in Uggla from third to give Memphis a 3-0 lead. Junior third baseman Tyler Shelton kept the rally going, as he singled to shallow right field, scoring senior left fielder/designated hitter Nate Sams, and the Tigers took a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third. Memphis would get one more run in the top of the fifth, when junior designated hitter/pitcher Jonathan Leicester hit a single to first and scored Sams from third, giving the Tigers a 5-0 lead, entering the bottom of the fifth. Saint Louis would get a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth, as Nick Steiner hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Eric Constable and the Billikens then trailed 5-1, going into the top of the seventh. The Tigers would get two more in the top of the ninth to increase their total and head into the end of the ninth up, 7-1. Saint Louis would attempt one last comeback, scoring two runs in the ninth, the rally fell short however, and Memphis would take the second game of this three-game series.
Frix led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a single and a home run while scoring two runs and grabbing one RBI. Fik was solid as well, going 1-for-2 with a single while drawing two walks and getting two RBI in the win.
Wiedmeyer (2-2) would pick up the win for Memphis, going five innings and allowing only one run on one hit while walking one and striking out one. Junior pitcher Layne Dawson came in to relieve Wiedmeyer in the second inning and went two innings allowing three hits, one walk and struck out two. Senior closer Sean Carlson came in to finish things off in the eighth and allowed two unearned runs on two hits and struck out one, in the win.
The loss went to Dan Shouse (1-4), who faced 38 batters and allowed four runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out seven.
These two teams will face-off again tomorrow in the final game of this three-game series. The first-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
