MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Courtney Trask scored 16 points and handed out 6 assists Sunday night to lead Memphis to a 78-67 victory over North Carolina-Charlotte.
The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Tigers (10-15, 3-9 Conference USA) and came despite a rain of 3-pointers by the 49ers (13-13, 5-8) in the second half. The 49ers, meanwhile, have dropped five of their last 6 games.
During one stretch in the second half, North Carolina-Charlotte hit eight straight 3-point field goals to try and erase a double-digit Memphis lead, but the 49ers could get no closer than three after an opening run by Memphis in the second half.
Shamel Jones scored 13 points off the bench and Earl Barron added 10.
Diego Guevara led North Carolina-Charlotte with 17 points, all in the second half. Tremaine Gardiner scored 14 and Jobey Thomas finished with 11.
Memphis led 28-26 at the half, but went on a 16-3 run early in the second half, including 10 straight points. Trask had eight points in the sequence as Memphis built the lead to 46-31, its largest of the night.
But the 49ers got hot from outside, led by Guevara. The 49er guard scored nine straight North Carolina-Charlotte points, and his teammates followed with nothing but 3-pointers.
When Thomas hit a 3-pointer with 3:09 remaining, North Carolina-Charlotte pulled to 63-30.
But Memphis, which at times has folded at the end of games, hustled to the end, and the 49ers could get no closer than five the rest of the way.
