MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Scott Scherer, coach Rip Scherer's son, threw for 175 yards and ran for a touchdown in his first college start as Memphis beat East Carolina 17-10 Saturday.
Scherer, the Tigers' third-string quarterback, completed 18 of 25 passes while filling in for the injured Travis Anglin and Neil Suber.
Memphis (4-2, 2-1 Conference USA) scored on its first three possessions, and was helped by a pair of first-quarter fumbles by East Carolina.
The Pirates (3-2, 1-1) rallied with 10 points in the fourth quarter, but their final drive ended when Memphis' Glenn Sumter picked off a deep pass.
Memphis took the opening kickoff and drove 84 yards in eight plays, ending with a 4-yard touchdown run by Sugar Sanders. Scherer went 4-for-4 for 59 yards through the air on the drive.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Tigers' Kosha Irby recovered a fumble by East Carolina's Keith Stokes. Scherer scored on a 6-yard run five plays later.
The Pirates fumbled again on their next possession, and Tigers kicker Ryan White's 20-yard field goal made it 17-0.
In the first half, East Carolina managed only 88 yards on offense, while Memphis piled up 222. The game changed after the break, and the Pirates finished with 310 yards to the Tigers' 304.
Memphis could have padded its lead in the third quarter, but White had two 32-yard field goal attempts blocked by East Carolina's Devone Claybrooks.
