MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's soccer team improved to 10-4-0 on the season and 5-2-0 in conference by defeating Marquette at Echles on Saturday evening.
The Golden Eagles, who have been ranked as high as seventh nationally earlier this season, fell to 9-5-2 on the season and 1-4-0 in C-USA with the loss. The game was a defensive one, with each team's goalkeeper tallying five saves on the night, but Memphis outshot Marquette 11-8.
After a scoreless first half, the game broke open in the 56th minute when junior Lars Thorstensen played a long pass from the Tiger defensive half through the Golden Eagles' defense to Sean Fraser, who broke through to score his 10th goal of the season and make the score 1-0.
It would be all the offense the Tigers would need, thanks to an excellent defensive effort from a trio of freshmen. Defenders Corey Shumate and Graham Gibbs seemed to be everywhere all night, and rookie goalkeeper Clark Talley had an outstanding performance in securing his third shutout of the season.
The Tigers step out of Conference USA play to host Lipscomb University on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. before closing out the conference schedule by hosting #14 Saint Louis on Saturday evening, October 28.
