Lady Tigers Snap Winning Streak

HATTIESBURG, MISS. - The University of Memphis Lady Tiger basketball team snapped a four-game winning streak with an 84-71 loss to coach Joye Lee-McNelis? alma mater Southern Mississippi here Friday evening.
The Lady Tigers dropped to 7-6 on the year, 1-1 in Conference USA, with the loss. Southern Miss is now 7-6 on the year and 1-1 in C-USA.
?We struggled a lot tonight,? said coach Joye Lee-McNelis ?We tried everything and they shot the lights out. They all shot the ball extremely well and played well together. I have watched them on film and each game they have gotten better. They are going to be a great team down the stretch.?
The Lady Tigers shot a blistering 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from the field in the second half, while USM came out strong in the latter half, shooting 52 percent (13-of-25) in the half. The Southern Miss defense showed a different side in the second half as well, forcing Memphis to turn the ball over 14 times. USM scored 27 points off Memphis? 22 turnovers, while Memphis scored 24 points off 26 USM turnovers.
Sophomore Lauren Jackson led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 14 points off a 5-of-13 shooting effort from the field. Jackson was 2-of-6 from three-point range. Also in double digits for the Lady Tigers were Melissa Abraham and Patrice Boyd who both added 11 points and Shannon Hamp who tapped in 10 points. Abraham and Boyd led the Lady Tigers in rebounding, grabbing nine and seven boards, respectively.
Five Lady Eagles scored in double digits led by Angela Atterberry?s 18 points. Angela Johnson and Kim Young both scored 15 points, while Dana Jones and Jessica Woods added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Wood led USM in rebounding with seven boards.
The Lady Tigers went to the lockerroom down by five at the intermission after shooting 47.2 percent (17-of-36) from the field. Shannon Hamp led Memphis in the first half with eight points. Lauren Jackson and Tiffany Adkins both added seven points in the first half. Southern Miss shot 63 percent (17-of-27) in the first half, led by Kim Young with 11 points. The Memphis defense forced 14 USM turnovers in the first half, but Southern Miss controlled the boards, outrebounding Memphis, 20-13. Patrice Boyd was the leading rebounder at the half with four boards.
The Lady Tigers will complete their three-game road stint on Sunday when they travel to New Orleans to play the Tulane Green Wave. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday. The Lady Tigers? next home game will be on Jan. 13 when they host South Florida in a 7 p.m. meeting at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
