MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Kenny Younger and Gee Gervin scored 19 each Saturday to lead Houston to a 98-89 victory over Memphis.
Younger and Gervin led a parade of six Cougars in double figures, including all five starters.
Houston (8-10, 2-3 Conference USA) led by as many as 20 in the second half, and held a 16-point lead with just over a minute to play.
George Williams added 14 for Houston and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Marcus Oliver had 12.
Marcus Moody led Memphis (8-10, 1-4) with 27 points, while Kelly Wise added 16 and 12 rebounds.
Houston led 48-37 at the half behind the play of Younger and Gervin. During separate stretches of the half, the pair took over the Cougar offense.
Younger scored 9 of his 11 first half points during a 6-minute stretch while Houston held advantages up to 9 points. Gervin scored all 10 of his first half points in the game's first seven minutes.
Memphis held an early lead at 13-10, but a 12-0 Houston run gave the Cougars a 22-13 lead.
The Cougars took their first double-digit lead of the game when Chad Hendrick, who scored 11 off the bench, hit a pair of free throws with 13.2 seconds left in the half.
Houston continued to maintain the double-digit advantage through much of the rest of the game.
A hot streak by Moody midway through the half was the only thing that kept the Tigers even close.
During a 3-minute stretch, Moody scored 15 straight Memphis points, at one point cutting the Houston advantage to 8 at 74-66 with 6:51 left in the game.
But Gervin and Hendrick hit consecutive 3-point shots to build the Houston advantage to 80-66, and Memphis never got closer than 9 points the rest of the way.
