Lady Tigers Snap Losing Streak, Defeat UALR 92-53

MEMPHIS, TENN. - The University of Memphis Lady Tiger basketball team snapped its first four-game losing streak since 1995 with a 92-53 victory over the Lady Trojans of Arkansas-Little Rock here at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse Thursday evening.
Freshman center Shannon Hamp led the Lady Tigers in scoring, shooting 7-of-11 from the field, for a career-best 17 points. She also totaled seven rebounds and two steals in just 19 minutes of action.
Sophomore Melissa Abraham was on a tear finishing with 12 points and 17 rebounds, for her first career double-double, including a career high in rebounds. With her performance on the boards, Abraham tied for the 4th best single-game total in Lady Tiger history. The school record is 25 set by Regina Street in 1985 against Southern Mississippi.
"I thought Ham (Abraham) did a phenomenal job attacking the glass tonight," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "The only thing that I wish we could have done better was to have more than two people rebounding."
Also, scoring in double figures for the Lady Tigers were Kelly Herron, Yolanda Reed, and Lauren Jackson with 11, 12, and 10 points, respectively. Herron and Jackson combined for 6-of-10 shooting from three-point land, while Reed grabbed a game-high 5 steals in 22 minutes of play. All 10 Lady Tigers who played in the game scored at least one field goal.
"I think there were several positives tonight," said McNelis. "We had intensity and we played with a lot of emotion. We did a great job early on setting the pace of the game. Our full-court pressure defense was very effective and I think that got us rolling."
Pacing the Lady Trojans was Quasha Burley with 16 points during 36 minutes of play. While Mediha Skoro and Eplunus Brooks both chipped in with 10 points and 8 rebounds, respectively.
With this win the Lady Tigers have now extended their winning streak in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse to nine games.
The Lady Tigers will head out to Little Rock this weekend to face the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks (7-0) in the newly constructed ALLTEL Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. Lady Tiger fans can listen WUMR's broadcast of the game via the internet on the new broadcast service at www.gotigersgo.com. Memphis' next home game will be Dec. 29 when the Lady Tigers host the Alabama Crimson Tide at 7 p.m. in the Mid-South Coliseum.
