MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Marcus Moody scored 23 points and Kelly Wise added 22 as Memphis defeated Jackson State 79-74 Wednesday night.
The Moody-Wise combo led a second half comeback by Memphis (3-2) as they overcame an 8-point deficit early in the second half.
Jackson State (2-3) never led after tying the game 45-45 with 11 minutes remaining.
Timmy Marks led Jackson State with 20 points, while Vincent Jones added 13. Roy Dixon and Deon Burns finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Wise led all rebounders with 9.
Jackson State, which led 31-28 at the half, built the lead to 39-31 when Marks hit a 3-pointer with 15:45 left in the game.
On the ensuing possession, a floor scuffle for a loose ball led to tempers flaring and players having to be separated.
The altercation seemed to inspire Memphis, which began pressing and went on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes. In the run, Moody scored seven points, and Paris London added six of his seven points on the night.
The burst gave Memphis a 45-41 lead.
Jackson State tied the game at 45-45 on two free throws by Marks and an inside basket by Leonard Taylor.
At that point, Memphis began pounding the ball inside to Wise. The 6-10 center scored 12 points over the next six minutes as Memphis maintained a 4- to 6-point lead.
Jackson State did get within two at 61-59 with 4:22 left, but Moody began taking over. He scored eight straight points during one stretch with under three minutes to play.
Jackson State never got closer than four points the rest of the game.
